Information after Curriculum Night

Hello!

It was wonderful to see such a great turn out during Curriculum Night last week! Research has shown that a strong home/school connection greatly improves student learning and that was definitely in evidence!

As promised, here is the link to help families to support the use of OCSB's digital tools in order to support their child’s learning and help them answer "What did you learn at school today?".

As discussed, our school is currently participating in the School Active Transportation Program!  Here is the link to the School Active Transportation Family Survey for St. Francis of Assisi. The information collected will be used to guide the Walk-About assessment (especially taking a look at our parking lot) and to develop the Action Plan for our school. As part of this, we are working to reduce school zone traffic and encourage more students to walk and wheel to school.

Here are our upcoming events:

Sacramental Preparation: unfortunately the information that I provided you in my last communication was the dates from last year - my apologies!  Divine Infant's website has been updated and here are the links to all of the necessary information. Please check ASAP as important dates are coming up soon!

First Reconciliation & First Eucharist: http://www.divineinfant.on.ca/reconeuch.html

Confirmation: http://www.divineinfant.on.ca/confirmation.html

School Council Meeting/ Elections are tomorrow night beginning at 7:00 in the Learning Commons. All are welcome! We have some very exciting ideas for this year and we would like your thoughts and volunteering of your time to make it happen!

Terry Fox Run/ Walk is Thursday, Sept 26th with a rain date of Friday, Sept 27th. Wear your school colours, dress to be outside, donate and make sure to fill in the excursion form that was sent home! Many thanks to Ms Kent and Mr Boddy for organizing this event!

Orange Shirt Day -  Orange Shirt Day is commemorated on September 30th each year and we encourage everyone to show their support! It is an influential movement sweeping across Canada that is helping to educate our students and communities on the history and legacy of the Residential School system. For more information, see the Official website:  http://www.orangeshirtday.org/

iWalk Day -  On Wednesday, Oct 2nd we will host a Walk to School Event to celebrate iWalk Day (International Walk to School Day!). We encourage as many students as possible to choose walking and wheeling to school on this day - and every day! Live in the bus zone? Riding the school bus is also a great option!  Not only is physical activity good for our bodies and minds - the walk to school can be a meaningful quality time with your child. Can’t walk or wheel all the way in? Consider parking a few blocks away and walking the last few minutes to school!  We hope you will join us in the celebration and create fun, healthy routines!

St Francis of Assisi Feast Day is Friday, Oct 4th! In honour of St Francis of Assisi, the patron Saint of the environment and animals, families are encouraged to come back to school with their pets from 4:00 - 4:30 PM to be part of a blessing ceremony on the yard from Deacon Steve! During the day classes will be spending time outside so please dress according to the weather! Many thanks to Mrs Birch for organizing this event!

Our Thanksgiving Mass will take place on Thursday, Oct 10th beginning at 9:45 in our gym.  We are excited to welcome our new Priest, Fr Anthony! Many thanks to Mme Hatano and Mrs Habraken for organizing this event!

There will be a PD Day on Friday, Oct 11th. On this day all OCSB employees and Trustees will gather as a community for a Mass to connect, recharge our souls and learn more in-depth about our Board initiatives!

Lastly, school will be closed on Monday, Oct 14th. We wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving with family and friends. We at St Francis are very thankful for the wonderful community that makes up our St Francis family!

Take care,

Michelle McGarry & Staff
